Resumen

Introduction: One of the highest global rates of mental illness is seen in India. Around 450 million people worldwide are estimated by the WHO to have a mental or behavioral problem. According to National assessment on mental health, 14% of Indians needed active mental health interventions.WHO (2022) estimates that 3.5% to 10% of patients got readmission due to risk of getting relapse every month. So, Nurse advocacy programme plays a major role in prevention of drug compliance.

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of Nurse advocacy programme on knowledge regarding importance of compliance with medication and burden among primary caregiver of patients with mental disorders.

Materials and Methods: Quantitative research approach, Pre-experimental (one group Pre-test and Post-test) was adopted in the study. Totally 45 primary caregivers were selected by convenient sampling technique at MGMCRI Puducherry. Pretest and posttest was done by structured knowledge questionnaires and zarit caregiver burden scale, Nurse advocacy programme was given to the primary caregivers through directed teaching technique and by distributing booklet.

Result: The obtained values of paired ‘t’test (18.73 and 44.505) in level of knowledge regarding importance of compliance with medication and burden among primary caregiver of patients with mental disorders with the p value of <0.001 shows that was statistically significant.

Conclusion: The study proves that Nurse advocacy programme among primary caregiver was effective method and to improve the knowledge regarding importance of compliance with medication and reduction of caregivers burden.
