EFFECT OF MODULE BASED EDUCATION ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING CHILD MALTREATMENT AMONG MOTHERS OF CHILDREN WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY IN SELECTED SPECIAL SCHOOLS AT PUDUCHERRY

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a worldwide problem with long-term implications. According to the Journal of the Arc and the Child Welfare Information Gateway, one out of every three disabled children and one out of every ten non-disabled children have been maltreated. Module-based education is used to increase awareness on child maltreatment among mothers of children with intellectual disability.

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of Module Based Education on knowledge regarding child maltreatment among mothers of children with intellectual disability.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Pre-Experimental Research design was adopted for the study. 60 mothers were selected by Purposive Sampling Technique. The data was collected, and a structured knowledge questionnaire was used to conduct the pre-test. Module Based Education regarding child maltreatment was given one hour daily for 21 days among mothers of children with intellectual disability and post-test were conducted using the same questionnaire.

RESULT: The result depicts that, in pre-test most of the mothers had inadequate knowledge (95%) and (5%) of mothers had moderate knowledge regarding child maltreatment. During the post-test, 100% of the mothers had adequate knowledge on child maltreatment. There was highly statistically significant indicating differences in pre test and post test level of knowledge regarding child maltreatment among mothers of children with intellectual disability (t= 38.432 and p< 0.001) respectively.

CONCLUSION: Module Based Education was very effective in improving the knowledge on child maltreatment among mothers of children with intellectual disability.
