Abstract

Background of the study: Patient safety is a fundamental element of health care and can be defined as freedom for a patient from unnecessary harm or potential harm associated with health care. Patient safety aims at making health care safe for both clients and health service staff. (1)   Hospital-associated infections (HAI) are the most common complications of hospital care and have increased in the last two decades. Healthcare-associated infections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.Approximately 1.7 million hospitalized patients develop hospital-associated infections annually, and 98,000 lose their lives each year. (2)

Purpose:  To estimate the efficacy of CLABSI care bundle compliance status and to evaluate the effectiveness of the training module in preventing infections.

Materials & Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design study conducted at Rural Tertiary Multi speciality Medical teaching hospital, R. L Jalappa Hospital & Research Centre, Tamaka, Kolar. The samples collected for the study is Patients case files with Central line Care Bundle using a purposive sampling technique. Data was collected using CLABSI checklist and Central Line care bundle outcome assessment Tool. Followed by training module sessions for the nursing officers. Data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results: The results of the study revealed that, Efficacy of CLABSI compliance status before and After the Intervention. Majority 116(58%) had maintained the compliance for CLABSI checklist, 84(42%) found to be shown as non-compliance to checklist.  After the implementation of Training programme, the post-test scores compliance for CLABSI checklist ranged, Majority 198(99%) of them had maintained good compliance whereas 02 (1%) had Non-compliance. There was a significant improvement between the before and after intervention mean scores of 15.13 with SD of ± 1.91, whereas after the intervention mean scores was enhanced to 19.16±0.515, and Paired “t” test values with comparison of mean scores within the group showed that “t” value is 28.217 respectively and found to be statistically significant at P<0.001 with degree of freedom at 199. There was an association between the Efficacy scores and the selected socio-demographic variables, such as Age (2 1.23 df-1, p-0.26), Gender (2 0.65 df-1, p-0.41) and Length of Hospital stay (2 0.11df-1, p-0.73) found to be not significant, while Diagnosis (2 0.353 df-1) found to be significant at p-<0.05 level of significance.

Conclusion: Efficacy of CLABSI maintenance care bundle checklist compliance in preventing infections found to have significant improvement in mean scores of before and after intervention Thus it emphasises that, training module proven to be effective in preventing multiple infections among critical care patients.
