Abstract

Introduction: Incident reporting is one of the primary methods for monitoring errors to stop their repetition. One of the cornerstones of safer potential risks is an incident reporting system (IRS), which warns personnel of potential system breakdowns in the business. (1)

Aim of the study: To understand the Incident reporting of nursing officers through simulation-based training.

Materials and Methods:  Quantitative approach, Quasi Experimental one group pretest- posttest design among  250 Nursing officers of R.L.Jalappa Hospital & Research Centre were selected for the study by using simple random sampling technique and written informed consent has been obtained.  After obtaining IEC, data was assessed regarding Knowledge and Competency level using a Knowledge questionnaire and checklist followed by creating a Simulation scenario, and the training was given to 10 groups. The pretest was carried out on the day of recruitment followed by a posttest after 14 days. Data were analyzed by using Descriptive and inferential statistics such as frequency, Paired ‘t’-test, and Chi-square. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS version 22, using frequency, percentage, chi-square, paired test at P < 0.05 level of significance.

Results: Distribution of pretest level of knowledge regarding incident reporting among nursing staffs revealed that majority 134 (53.2%) had moderately adequate knowledge 55 (22%) had inadequate knowledge and only145 (58%) of them had adequate knowledge and pre-test level of competency, Almost 7 (2.8%) of the Nursing Staff had a poor level of competency level and the remaining 243 (97.2%) had Good level of competency level whereas, in Post-test level of competency level scores, it’s evident that, 250 (100%) of Nursing Staff had Good level of competency level and 0 (0%) had Poor level of competency level on incident reporting among Nursing Staff.

Conclusion: As per the study findings, it’s evident that, necessary to explore the level of knowledge and reporting competency on Incident reporting among Nursing Staff who are the corner stone in building safe therapeutic milieu and save life of individual patient in specific and Nations health as a whole. This study served as credible evidence that, through Simulation-based training; statistically significant improvement was seen in the knowledge and Competency domains of nursing officers toward Incident reporting thus enhanced patient safety culture can be achieved.
