Abstract

Background of study:

India, the world's second-largest nation, is particularly vulnerable to catastrophic occurrences. Indian subcontinent occasionally suffers meteorological extremes including intense monsoon rains, floods, periods of excessive heat, drought. World Health Organization recognizes the need for making hospitals safe, especially at a time of disasters and emergencies (1-5). Hospitals are one of the essential institutions that must continue to function when an emergency event occurs. (6)

Aim: To assess the Knowledge and Competency level on Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness among Nursing Staff and to evaluate the effectiveness of Simulation-Based Training.

Methods: A quasi experimental one group pre and posttest design was adopted, using validated Structured Knowledge Questionnaire and observational checklist. A total of 200 Nursing Staff were selected by using simple random sampling technique with lottery method. The samples were grouped into ten teams with twenty Nurses in each team. The Simulation-Based Training was conducted on the same day of the pretest. After 14th day posttest was conducted by using same tool. The data was analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results:   The study findings revealed that majority of the Nursing Staff 128 (64%) was in age group 30 years of age, 140 (70%) was belonged to female category, 130 (65%) of them B. Sc. (N), 120(60%) above 3 years of clinical experience, 78 (39%) of them working in General Wards, 88(44%) was Junior Nursing Staff. There was a significant increase in knowledge and competency level after Simulation-Based Training. The difference between mean pre and posttest knowledge and competency level was significant at p<0.05. Hence, stated hypotheses are accepted.

Conclusion:  Finally, the researcher concluded that the Simulation based Training on disaster management and emergency preparedness was effective in improving and enhancing the competency level in handling disasters.
